Chapter 12

Just then, Paul stood up and tapped his fork against his water glass. All eyes turned toward Tracy’s table. If she could have disappeared under the fine linen tablecloth at that very moment, she would have. But now, everyone was looking, and she had to put on her very best smile.

“Can I have your attention? Attention, please,” Paul said as he stood up, the scent of his freshly showered body and light cologne enveloping Tracy. Her stomach fluttered, and she reached for her iced tea to steady herself.

“Thank you. Thank you everyone.” Paul cleared his throat and waited for everyone to quiet down. “Thank you. Now, I would like to make a short speech.”

“Short?” Kenneth said as everyone in the room laughed.

Paul smiled his million-dollar smile and continued. “Yeah, big brother, a short speech. First, I want to thank Kenneth and Courtney for picking this amazing resort to hold their wedding. And for inviting us all to be part of your very special day.” Paul paused as everyone looked at the happy couple. He cleared his throat again, trying not to focus on the feelings he was having remembering his almost very special day.

He went on. “Second, and more importantly, I want to thank Howard and Margo, who I like to call Mom and Dad, for footing the bill for this extravagant affair and for flying us all here so we can be part of this. Mom, Dad, thank you!” He lifted his glass as he looked toward his parents.

Across the room, Margo and Howard held hands and smiled humbly, waving slightly to the rest of the guests.

“So, here’s to Margo and Howard. And here’s to Courtney and Kenneth. May you be as happy as our parents, and may your life together be as blessed as theirs!”

“Here, here!” The shouts went up across the room and everyone raised their glasses in a toast. Paul sat back down as the servers began placing salads in front of the guests.

“Well,” Paul said to Tracy as he placed his napkin in his lap. “How’d I do?”

Tracy smiled, unable to control herself. Paul had always been so good in the spotlight. And he always knew just what to say and when to say it. “You were great,” she said, feeling good when she said it.

The dinner was served and as everyone ate, people began making their way around the room to talk with each other. Paul excused himself to go talk with his parents. Julie took the opportunity to leave her table and come sit next to Tracy and flirt with the two lawyers across from her. By the end of the night, everyone had mingled just enough. When dessert and coffee were served, the guests started thinning out.

“This was nice,” Paul said as he took the last bite of his cheesecake.

“Yeah, it was nice,” Tracy said despite herself. She had sworn she wouldn’t let her guard down with Paul. She had even practiced short responses and polite conversation the weeks leading up to the wedding.
